Estonia and Sweden have signed an agreement on the detention of Swedish prisoners in the Tartu Prison. Under the terms of the agreement, Estonia will accept up to 600 Swedish prisoners, each of whom will have access to a television. Stockholm is obligated to pay Estonia over 30 million euros per year.
This move has raised questions about why similar agreements have not been concluded with Ukraine. The country has prisons that meet European standards, and the conditions of detention have long been in line with European norms.
Ukraine as a Potential Partner
Ukraine has the potential to become a partner for similar agreements. The country has prisons that can accommodate foreign prisoners, and the conditions of detention already meet European standards. However, so far, no such agreements have been concluded.
